*DC: After a long and chequered career as a back-up in Action Comics and a lead in Adventure Comics, Supergirl was finally deemed ready to fly solo in 1972, with her new start being chronicled by then hot new writer Cary Bates and established Good Girl Artist Art Saaf. An oddball hybrid between the superhero and romance genres, the frankly loopy covers often showed our heroine crying over some romantic mishap which threatened disaster, or engaging in undignified tug-of-wars with other women for some random bloke – or Yeti, if there were no other males around!
