Books Update: Philip K Dick Restocked
*Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror: With the sequel to Blade Runner wowing viewers in the cinemas, this is an apposite time to add more Philip K Dick books, including, of course, the original Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? and its movie version, Blade Runner. In addition we’ve added A Handful Of Darkness, A Scanner Darkly, Martian Time-Slip and The Game Players Of Titan.
Books Update: Spotted At Last – More Philip K Dick!
*Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror: After a lengthier hiatus than we would wish, the Books section presents five Hard Cover works by Philip K Dick. A man of wide-ranging talent, he wrote mainstream novels as well as Science Fiction, and we’ve stretched our boundaries a little to accommodate two non-SF books. So what do we have? The non-SF titles are The Broken Bubble and The Dark Haired Girl, both 1st editions from 1989 and 1988 respectively. The SF titles consist of Valis, World Of Chance and a collection entitled Robots, Androids, And Mechanical Oddities – The Science Fiction Of Philip K Dick (ed. Warrick & Greenberg). In addition to being a 1st UK HC, Valis is distinguished by being a Trade edition, from a run limited to only 1500 copies. This copy seems to have spent some time at W1A, having BBC stamps on the front and back pages. World Of Chance is the only one of the five to lack a DJ, but it is the oldest, being a 2nd UK HC from 1957. Robots, Androids, And Mechanical Oddities collects 15 of Dick’s short stories, each with an introductory note by the editors.

Also included are several collections of short stories, such as A Handful Of Darkness, The Preserving Machine and The Turning Wheel And Other Stories. There are several 1st PB editions: Lies, Inc., Now Wait For Last Year and Dick’s collaboration with Ray Nelson, The Ganymede Takeover, in 1st US PB with the added attraction of Jack Gaughan cover art. With so many goodies SF fans will be hard-pressed to make a choice!
Books Update: Stellar Authors, Stretching All The Way From A To D!
*Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror: Fifteen Science Fiction books by authors who should need no introduction join our bookshelves today. Venturing only four letters into the alphabet, they are Brian Aldiss, Isaac Asimov, J G Ballard, Arthur C Clarke and Philip K Dick. Every book is a highlight, but notable amongst them are Report On Probability A, Aldiss’ take on quantum mechanics and the multiverse theory, which is complex enough to make Schrodinger’s cat need a lie-down, Ballard’s The Drowned World, where the Triassic Age returns to London, and Philip K Dick’s The Transmigration Of Timothy Archer, the final part of the Valis trilogy, an exploration of belief. From Philip K Dick we have Solar Lottery and We Can Build You (with cover art by John Schoenherr), from Frank Herbert, Dune, Hellstrom’s Hive, The Dosadi Experiment and The Dragon In The Sea and from the irrepressible Kurt Vonnegut Jr we have Breakfast of Champions, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Mother Night, Slaughterhouse 5, The Sirens Of Titan and Wampeters Foma & Granfalloons.
Books Update: Four Great Books
*Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror: In fact there are 10 great books and many shorter stories altogether in these large tomes. The collection of Philip K Dick novels (The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch, Martian Time-Slip, Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, Ubik and A Scanner Darkly) represents the first opportunity to get these classics in one volume. The Classic Horror Omnibus similarly brings together five classic horror novels (Frankenstein: Mary Shelley, The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde: Robert Louis Stevenson, The Werewolf: Clemence Housman, Dracula: Bram Stoker and The Phantom Of The Opera: Gaston Leroux) in a striking hardcover edition. The Gardner Dozois curated Year’s Best Science Fiction (25) features work by authors such as Stephen Baxter, Gregory Benford, Robert Silverberg, Bruce Sterling and Michael Swanwick in a NM grade 1st US PB. The highlight of this update, however, is Philip George Chadwick’s The Death Guard. Originally published in 1939, and the only novel he wrote, this legendary rarity languished almost forgotten until it was published again in 1992. Featuring a striking cover by an old friend of 30th Century, Peter Garriock, this is a rare opportunity to obtain this story. Written before genetic engineering was even a twinkle in biologists eyes, the Flesh Guard are modified plants turned into automatons to defend Britain, with horrific unexpected results (a bit like some vegetarian Christmas dinners!)
