Inspired no doubt by DC’s Imaginary Stories of the 1960s, in 1977 Marvel came up with the What If concept, which had fun with the what-might-have-beens of the Marvel Universe. Highly popular with fans, who loved this sort of done-in-one stories previously only the speculations of fandom, the What If franchise lasted 47 issues of the first series, spawned a highly successful sequel series and still continues with a range of one-shots periodically to this day.
