American Comics Update: The Bute Collection: Exciting Comics #58 with Airbrush Schomburg Judy of the Jungle cover

*Miscellaneous 1940-1959: There’s a range of Alex Schomburg good girl covers in four Nedor titles post war: Exciting, Startling, Thrilling and Wonder, quite unlike anything else published in comics due to the airbrush technique used in their production which gives them a unique look. Each title featured either a space adventuress or jungle girl, In the case of Exciting, it was the turn of Judy of the Jungle to shine. Far be it from me to comment that there’s anything suggestive about the rhino menace on the cover to this issue from the Bute Collection. As well as Judy, interior strips include super-hero Black Terror, adventure with Strut Simmons, crime with the Crime Crushers, comedy strips and more. These Schomburg airbrush covers form an attractive set to collect, if in many cases the prices on decent copies have risen beyond a comfortable level for many collectors. There are various defects to this copy which bring it down to virtually an entry level. A bookshop stamp with red ink is central cover, between Judy and tree, and extra staples have been added at the spine. There is also wear and cover creases which aren’t too bad; page quality is quite reasonable.
