*Gold Key/Whitman: Doctor Solar, Man Of The Atom was Gold Key’s first original character, debuting in 1962. Solar was created by writer Paul S. Newman and editor Matt Murphy, with accomplished illustrations from artist Bob Fujitani (later by Frank Bolle) and gorgeous cover paintings by Richard Powers and George Wilson. Doctor Solar gained his powers to convert his body into any kind of nuclear energy whilst trying to avert a meltdown in a nuclear power plant (don’t try this at home, kids!). It wasn’t until issue #5 that Solar gained a costume and became a recognisable super-hero. We have the first 8 issues of the series fresh in from the Bute Collection.
