*Children’s Books: For the second part of our feature on Reginald Heade this week, something very different to his more famous fare above. Heade illustrated many covers for the Abbey Girls series by Elsie J Oxenham, from the 1920s onwards. I’ve read one or two of these (there are more than three dozen in the series) and they are well plotted and well written schoolgirl adventures, very evocative of the period. I will return for more, even though I’m far from their target audience! Nice to see this more innocent side of Heade’s work, just as beautifully illustrated, in these two handsome hardcover editions with archival protected dust jackets. .
