British Comics Update: L Miller’s Captain Marvel Jr
*Vintage UK/Australian Reprints of US Material: Collecting Len Miller’s black and white reprints of Fawcett’s Captain Marvel Jr can be a confusing and somewhat fraught endeavour. Firstly, there were three series. The first, starting in 1944/45 comprised a handful of unnumbered and non-sequentially numbered issues – nobody seems to know exactly how many and they are vanishingly rare. That series ended with #50, which is also the number that the second series commenced with in 1950, ending in 1953 with #85. The third series (confusingly called Vol 1) 1953/54 lasted for 24 issues before evolving into Young Marvelman when Miller no longer had the Fawcett concession and relied on Mick Anglo to come up with a British equivalent. It is interesting to note that the penultimate issue of the third series (in this update) was already trailing the name ‘Young Marvelman’ on the cover. We present two issues of the second series and six from the third.
