British Update: The British Are Coming! Long Hot Summer – June & School Friend Holiday Specials and Special Extras, including Rare Early Issues!
*Girls’ Comics: The latest entry in our ‘British Are Coming’ event is a bit of a poser. It’s not often that we are at a loss to definitely identify dates for our stock, but this time we have to own up: Bessie Bunter and her pals have stumped the panel! We have a magnificent seven June Specials new to our lists this week, but the earlier four have neither external date nor interior copyright dates, and the information on the internet and elsewhere is both scanty and contradictory. We believe the one pictured with the horse eating cake, is the first Special Extra from 1968, and that the other three in the yellow livery are from 1968 and 1969 (1970 and later appear to have a cover price of 3/-, rather than 2/6). If you have any definite information, of course, please let us know. The remaining three later issues are more obliging, giving their dates on the front covers. June is a popular girl, regardless of who she’s paired with, and the Holiday Specials from this long-running series seem rarer than those of her sisters. The – putatively – 1968 Special Extra (horse eating cake) is a stunning FN+, at £100; the second Special Extra (Bessie eating aples) is VG £75. Of the two earlier Holiday Specials, Bessie on inflatable is VG £75; Bessie in boat is PR/FA £30. Following along is June & Pixie Holiday Special 1976 VG £40, June & School Friend Holiday Special 1977 VG £40, and June & School Friend Holiday Special 1978 FN £50. In our 25 years of trading, we have never actually seen the earlier four items before, so while we can’t say with confidence exactly what dates they are, we are completely sure of their rarity, so don’t wait for another quarter of a century for them to come up again! SORRY, THESE HAVE NOW SOLD
