British Comics Update: This Week’s #1: Air Ace Picture Library 1960

Posted on 12th November 2022 by 30CC12th November 2022

*Boys’ Adventure & War Picture Libraries: ‘Target Top Secret’ is the title of the very first issue of Fleetway’s hugely popular Air Ace Picture Library dating from 1960. Brilliantly painted covers of aerial encounters are a huge selling point for this series. Our latest copy of #1 is a nice mid-grade copy with a solid spine and nice pages. Tiny bit of wear to top right corner and faint creasing at the base of the spine which does not break colour. The single staple (as printed) has a little rust with some (non-extensive) migration at the rear cover and pages.

A few selections are shown here; see our catalogue for full details.

American Comics Update: 80 Page Giants from #1

Posted on 5th November 2022 by 30CC5th November 2022

*DC: Back in the heady Silver Age days, just about the only way you could get to read the older stories of DC’s premier characters was in the 80 Page Giant Annuals they released for each series once per year. Then, in 1964, buoyed by the success of these annuals, DC turned the 80 Page Giant idea into a regular series of rotating characters, thus enabling us to catch up with a much bigger selection of these early stories than hitherto. After 15 issues, they broadened the concept again to include the Giants in the regular numbering of the series concerned. So this week we present most issues from that 15 issue run known as 80 Page Giant, including #1 (which would have been Superman Annual #9), #5, Batman’s 25th Anniversary special, #9, reprinting ‘Flash Of Two Worlds’, and many others. See our catalogue for full details.

American Comics Update: The Totally Amazing Spider-Man Collection: Amazing #21 with the Beetle and the Torch

Posted on 5th November 2022 by 30CC5th November 2022

*Marvel: If you’re looking for really nice copies of Amazing Spider-Man for your collection, then look no further than the Totally Amazing Spider-Man Collection. All high grade; even the few that fall below VF (and most are above) are really good-looking copies – no duds here, and nearly all cents copies. In Amazing Spider-Man #21, our hero comes up against the Human Torch’s old foe the Beetle for the first time, with the Torch himself involved for good measure (Johnny Storm’s path crossed frequently with the wall-crawler’s back in those days). This is a clean and flat cents copy with a glossy cover, vivid colour and great reflectivity, square corners and virtually no wear. Supple pages are off-white to cream, staples are firm and tight at spine and centrefold. Just a tiny bit of wear along the top of the masthead, and miniscule chipping at lower edge; there is also a small arrival date in pen above the ‘the’ in the logo.

American Comics Update: The Good Doctor Collection: X-Men #6: Sub-Mariner Joins The Evil Mutants

Posted on 5th November 2022 by 30CC8th November 2022

*Marvel: From the Good Doctor Collection this week, the sixth issue of the X-Men from 1964, in which both Professor X and Magneto speculate that Namor the Sub-Mariner might be a mutant and set out to recruit him to their cause. As you might imagine, fun, games and lots of fisticuffs etc ensue in this Lee & Kirby classic. Noticeable that even this early in their careers, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were getting cover billing and lots of exposure. This is a very nice pence printed copy, with an ummarked cover, good colours and some residual gloss. Excellent off-white pages and staples tight at spine and centrefold. A small amount of corner blunting, a very shallow reading crease at spine which does not break colour and a few minor stress marks there which just do. All in all, a superior mid-grade copy.

Popular villain the Rhino appears in #124, and #126 features the first appearance of Barbara Norris, who was soon to become Valkyrie. The Avengers pop up in #128. Full details as always in our catalogue.

American Comics Update: The Bute Collection: National Comics #39 (1944) Hitler cover

Posted on 5th November 2022 by 30CC8th November 2022

*Miscellaneous 1940-1959: Quality’s National Comics was where the symbolic character Uncle Sam made his debut (in #1) and by issue #39 in 1944, he was kicking Hitler’s butt on the iconic cover to this Bute Collection gem. National Comics was an anthology title featuring, in addition to Uncle Sam, several now obscure super-heroes such as G2, the Unknown and Quicksilver (no, not the one you think), and less super characters such as Policewoman Sally O’Neill and Chic Carter, police reporter. You certainly got a lot of reading in the big 56 pages. This reasonable copy has a clear and unmarred cover scene with a rich purple background. Relatively minor edge wear with some minor chipping to the right edge. There is a slight spine roll. Pages are supple and a very decent off-white. It was printed with only one central staple; this is off at the front cover with a staple-sized hole where it has come loose; it is, however, firmly attached at the back cover. A lovely, very rare item with a significant cover and charming interiors.

American Comics Update: The Bute Collection: Pre-Code Horror Fest: Ace’s Baffling Mysteries and Web Of Mystery

Posted on 5th November 2022 by 30CC5th November 2022

*Horror 1940-1959: In the main, Pre-Code Horror isn’t my bag (with some notable exceptions), but I do quite admire the four titles published by Ace: Baffling Mysteries, Beyond, Hand Of Fate and Web Of Mystery. They are well-crafted and have a nice house look about them, qualities I would find quite attractive to collecting. A lot of this is down to the very accomplished artwork of the Matt Bakeresque Lou Cameron, which appears liberally throughout the line. They have certainly risen in popularity over the years. The Bute Collection has yielded just two examples so far:
PICTURED:
BAFFLING MYSTERIES #21 GD/VG £80 Solid enough with a worn spine with short upper and lower splits. Staples and pages okay, unmarked cover image.
WEB OF MYSTERY #25 GD+ £70 Spine quite worn and tired, lower staple coming loose, but okay.

British Comics Update: Dan Dare’s Spacebook 1953

British Comics Update: Top Spot 1959

Posted on 5th November 2022 by 30CC5th November 2022

*Boys’ Adventure & War Comics: A further and final (for now) set of additions to Top Spot for 1959. Top Spot, starting in 1958, was an unusual and not altogether successful attempt to link something like a traditional boys’ comic (albeit with more adult storylines) with the world of glamour, sport and showbiz (a la Tit-Bits or Reveille). Thus photos and articles on glamour stars would sit alongside quality picture strip stories of crime, sport, western and action. Despite being a publication of some quality, the experiment failed and the comic was merged with Film Fun after a year and a bit. From 1959, a further 13 issues from #24 up, including those where the numbering was dropped and they were just dated. There is one undated and unnumbered issue which fits somewhere between 20/6 and 22/8; usually this was due to a strike and we suspect there were no other issues in that range. All in decent shape, a bit of foxing, a spot of rust on staple, but nice pages. Earlier issues had glamour girl covers, later picture strip ones.

American Comics Update: DC Debuts/Their Name Is Legion: 1st Star Boy & 1st Legion of Super-Pets

Posted on 29th October 2022 by 30CC8th November 2022

*DC: Two landmark issues of Adventure Comics before the Legion of Super-Heroes began its regular feature with #300. In #282, Superboy encounters Star Boy, who was introduced as having all of Superboy’s powers and the newest member of the Legion. Obviously, the editors forgot about him for quite a while after the Legion feature was launched, because it was quite a while before he appeared again with a hasty explanation that his powers had worn off, just leaving him with his ability to make things super-heavy (evidently the Legion already had enough members with Superboy’s powers). In #293, we were treated to the debut of the Legion of Super-Pets, including the very first appearance of Comet the Super-Horse, joining Krypto, Streaky and Beppo. I’ll let you in on a little secret: this was the very first story featuring the Legion I ever read, when it was originally published in 1962.
PICTURED: ADVENTURE COMICS

American Comics Update: The Good Doctor Collection: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Black Knight in Avengers #47/48

Posted on 29th October 2022 by 30CC29th October 2022

*Marvel: Leading our Good Doctor releases this week: The Black Knight has a long and distinguished history at Marvel. Originally, a heroic knight at the court of King Arthur in the Atlas series of the 1950s, the name was revived in the Silver Age, first as the villainous foe of Giant-Man, and later as the new Black Knight (Dane Whitman) in the Avengers and elsewhere in the Marvel Universe (both US & UK). Avengers #47 features the first appearance of Dane Whitman, with him becoming the Black Knight in #48.
PICTURED: AVENGERS
#47 VF £235 Bright and glossy, lovely off-white to white supple pages and excellent staples. The only wear is a couple of short creases which don’t break colour near the spine, created from reading. A beautifully fresh copy.
#48 FN/VF p £275 Pence stamped. Colourful and glossy, with slightly blunted corners. Lovely off-white to white supple pages and excellent staples. It’s one of those copies which is printed slightly off centre so that a very small piece of the cover image is shown along the spine edge of the back cover. American Comics Update: The Good Doctor Collection: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Captain Marvel Double Bill

Posted on 29th October 2022 by 30CC31st October 2022

*Marvel: Also from the Good Doctor Collection this week: One of the forerunners of the ‘second wave’ of the Marvel Universe in 1968 was Captain Marvel, warrior of the mighty Kree Empire, which had featured in the Fantastic Four and elsewhere. Exiled on Earth and forced to live among humans, Mar-Vell found his loyalties strangely shifting. Originally created as a cynical exercise in copyright protection (a minor publisher had produced a short-lived ‘Captain Marvel’ series a couple of years before, and Marvel Comics didn’t want their ‘brand’ hijacked by another company!), Captain Marvel, as well as the Silver Surfer, expanded the Marvel Universe beyond the confines of Earth and put the Marvel heroes firmly on the cosmic stage. We have the good Captain’s premier appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 new in, plus the first issue of his series which debuted shortly after.

American Comics Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Scott Lang as Ant-Man in Marvel Premiere #47/48

Posted on 29th October 2022 by 30CC31st October 2022

*Marvel: When the Ant-Man name was unclaimed in the late 1970s, a brainier-than-average sneak-thief, Scott Lang, stole Hank Pym’s old apparatus and became the second bearer of that title! But it’s okay – he did bad things for good reasons, specifically to find a cure for his dying daughter, as was revealed in Marvel Premiere #47 and #48, the two-part tale which (after a non-costumed cameo in Avengers #181) was Scott’s first full appearance. John Byrne and David Michelinie created this different take on the hero, and since then, Scott has had his ups and downs – been in jail a few times, been dead a few more, been a love-slave of the Purple Man (No, really. Google it. Better yet, don’t) – but he’s fought his way back to respectability, and has achieved cinematic stardom in two eponymous movie hits, plus pivotal roles in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. This double-dip debut for our loveable scientist scofflaw consists of nice high-grade copies.

American Comics Update: Racket Squad In Action #12 with famous Ditko explosion cover

Posted on 29th October 2022 by 30CC31st October 2022

*Charlton: Racket Squad In Action was a pre- and post-code crime comic starting in 1952 and lasting 29 issues. It focused on swindlers and con games, which seemed to allow it to survive the Comics Code longer than most Pre-Code crime comics, despite its lurid violence. The Pre-Code issue #12 features its most famous cover, executed by Steve Ditko and showing an explosion and its victims. This is a nice mid-grade solid copy, tiny split at top of otherwise firm spine, good staples at spine and centrefold, some corner blunting, but very little wear, just a reading crease that breaks colour and small colour-breaking creases bottom right corner. Vivid cover scene, known as Ditko’s most violent, is undisturbed.

Books Update: Re-Working our Crime, Spies & Sleaze Category: Carter Brown

Posted on 29th October 2022 by 30CC31st October 2022

*Crime, Spies & Sleaze: We’re continuing to introduce the new layout for our books categories, with an image for each book. This week, we return to our Crime, Spies and Sleaze category, and the detective novels of Carter Brown. Alan Geoffrey Yates was a British born Australian who wrote under that pseudonym between 1954 and 1984. He was extremely prolific in this and other genres, turning out over 300 novels in his career. His work was hard-boiled in the style of Raymond Chandler, without the plot complexity, but with an entertaining sense of humour and laconic noir feel. The novels were written in the first person in the guise of one of several detective protagonists he used, examples being Lt Al Wheeler, tough cop, Rick Holman, Hollywood trouble-shooter to the stars and Mavis Seidlitz, whose IQ was lower than her bust size (allegedly). (We have detailed which detective features in which novel in our listings). Originally published in Australia (but all set in America, because “his readers preferred it”), Brown became internationally famous when they were published in first the USA and then the UK. The earlier American Signets were cover-illustrated by Barye Phillips and the later ones by Robert McGinnis, two highly talented artists who captured the spirit of the books beautifully. Most scenes featured sexy women, but inside the sex was always suggested rather than explicit. The cover art for the Passionate (see below) was used for the cover of Glamour International 25 (see our Book Art Books entry this week). A few highlights from our extensive stock are shown here, including two books new in.

American Comics Update: Rip Hunter, Time Master

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC22nd October 2022

*DC: The scientist/leader. His best friend (who’s big and strong). His girlfriend. Her kid brother. Sound familiar? Yes, of course, that’s the format of the team in Rip Hunter, Time Master… Rip Hunter, Time Master debuted in DC’s try-out title Showcase in May 1959, four and a half years before a certain time-travelling Time Lord (there are similarities in that Rip’s Time Sphere travelled in time and occasionally space, combining historical settings with science-fiction themes from time to time). Rip was a scientist who invented said Time Sphere and persuaded his friends to accompany him on various adventures in which they encountered Hitler, George Washington and Cleopatra, among many others; aliens and magical adversaries were also not uncommon. Rip’s companions comprised Jeff Smith, his strong best friend, Bonnie Baxter, his girlfriend, and Corky Baxter, her kid brother. They first appeared dressed in ‘civvies’ but later adopted a team costume. Created by writer Jack Miller and artist Ruben Moreira, the concept was popular enough to get four try-outs in Showcase before being promoted to its own series which lasted 29 issues. Time travel stories are always engaging, with a different setting each issue, and although the writing and art was sometimes patchy, there is imagination, adventure and humour within the pages of this fine series and outstanding issues drawn by Mike Sekowsky, Joe Kubert and Alex Toth. A significant run of the series added this week between #4 and #29 (the final issue), adding to a comprehensive stock of this highly original and fondly remembered series. Take a look in our catalogue.

American Comics Update: The Good Doctor Collection: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Strange Tales #110, Debut of Dr Strange

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC22nd October 2022

*Marvel: A landmark from the Good Doctor Collection. Strange Tales #110, already the showcase title for the Fantastic Four’s junior member, the Human Torch, presented a mystery back-up strip starring a supernatural champion named Doctor Strange. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, already the creators of hugely popular twist-ending tales in a plethora of Big Panty Monster comics, turned their talents to an eldritch hero, and Doctor Strange was born! Essentially a retread of Marvel’s previous Dr. Droom character, where this Doctor had the advantage was in Steve Ditko’s powerful and gripping artwork, quite unlike anything else in the field, which catapulted the good Doctor from an interesting novelty into the Marvel Universe’s Master of the Mystic Arts. Unheralded on the cover – honestly, is anyone really bothered if Paste-Pot Pete’s Invincible Paste-Gun does finish the Torch off? – the stylish back-up story introduced the Sorceror Supreme to the Marvel Universe, commencing a lengthy career which has crossed over very successfully into the MCU. Here he faces the recurring threat of Nightmare for obviously the first time. Although possessing decent off-white to cream page quality, this is a low grade cents copy, with the front and back covers, mostly held together by tape on the inside, separated from the contents. The inside tape also extends slightly to seal some small tears near the spine. There’s heavy wear with colour breaking creases round all the edges, although the central image remains unmarked. The copy is a bit limp and tired, although the staples, which hold the contents well (if not the covers) are strong. First appearances of Marvel’s main characters have spiralled out of reach of most collectors’ budgets in recent years, but at least here’s a copy that’s cheaper than a mortgage (particularly at the moment!). High resolution images are available on request.

American Comics Update: Spider-Mania: The Totally Amazing Spider-Man Collection: Amazing #51, 1st Kingpin cover

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC24th October 2022

*Marvel: If you’re looking for really nice copies of Amazing Spider-Man for your collection, then look no further than the Totally Amazing Spider-Man Collection. All high grade; even the few that fall below VF (and most are above) are really good-looking copies – no duds here, and nearly all cents copies. The Kingpin makes his cover debut on Amazing Spider-Man #51, towering menacingly over a fallen Spidey with his gang gathered round in one of John Romita’s most memorable covers. I remember thinking what a visually striking figure was cut by the Kingpin, a testament to Romita’s design skills. This issue also features the debut of Daily Bugle man Robbie Robertson, who, if memory serves, was the first black recurring character to play an important role in Peter Parker’s life. This is a lovely fresh cents copy, with rich colour cover and reflectivity, staples firm at spine and centrefold and supple, near white pages. There is very faint reading wear at the spine, and a tiny blunting of the spine bottom.

American Comics Update: King Solomon’s Frog! Jack Kirby’s Bombastic Black Panther #1

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC1st November 2022

*Marvel: The Black Panther’s series in Jungle Action, which attracted a lot of acclaim at the time, was known for being verbose, introspective, reflective and philosophical. When the character’s co-creator, Jack Kirby, took over as writer and artist on T’Challa’s follow-up solo series, the results were… a considerable contrast. Shouting! Explosions! Aliens! Time-Travel! Implausibly-muscled ladies with black lipstick! Cosmic critters! All were here, and all playing at full volume all the time, in the crazed kinetic frenzy that Kirby was renowned for. Since the major movie hit, the King of Wakanda’s star is ever-ascendant, and this issue especially always sells very briskly because of its – frankly – high loopiness quotient. So, if you want this tale of ‘King Solomon’s Frog’, you’d better hop to it (sorry…) This is a decent mid-grade pence printed copy, with some spine wear  (small white ticks), corner blunting and half a dozen tiny pressure marks in the bottom right cover corner. But with excellent colour and gloss, white pages and firm, tight staples.

American Comics Update: Post Code Horror Fest: Black Magic with Hitler cover

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC24th October 2022

*Horror 1940-1959: Although the vast majority Crestwood’s Black Magic was published in the 1950s, the series lasted until 1962. We’ve decided to feature all issues of Black Magic in this category for consistency, even though some of them are later than 1959. The most significant of these later issues, Vol 7 #5 from 1960, is infamous for its cover featuring Adolf Hitler. The stories inside are very competently executed horror/mystery tales typical of the post code era. This is a nice clean, glossy copy with minor edge wear and corner blunting, good staples and page quality.

British Comics Update: Alan Class Plate Sets Final Phase: Spider-Man, Daredevil, Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC24th October 2022

*Alan Class Reprints: For many years now, we’ve been scouring the personal archives of legendary publisher Alan Class (who is still very much with us) and with his full co-operation, releasing for sale sets of the original printing plates that were used to print the covers of his comics from 1959-1989. We have now reached the final phase of these plate set releases, which will last us throughout 2022. These sets are time-consuming to prepare, so our release schedule will be staggered. But the good news is that all the sets we have left are among the best, either featuring a classic Marvel comic reprint, or else a very early fantasy/mystery issue. So, this final phase represents your last opportunity to add one or more of these unique pieces to your collection. Each set comprises the lead printing plates used in the original comic’s colour printing, a copy of the comic printed with these plates and a signed certificate of authenticity signed by Alan Class himself. These are packaged in a special protective presentation case. Several sets (as noted) have additional historical artefacts such as colour proofs, interior page plates, printers’ photostats etc. (Please be aware that these weigh a lot and postage will be expensive. Also note that due to the onerous paperwork required for customs declarations following Brexit, we can no longer post these Plate Sets outside the UK.) Three new sets this week as follows: ALL SOLD
CREEPY WORLDS #115 £60 Comic FA; Reprints Daredevil  #49 (inc cover), ACG, Captain Midnight.  NB Comic water damaged. Extra: Colour cover proof, taped
SINISTER TALES #93 £60 Comic FA/GD; Reprints SHIELD #10 (inc cover),  Atlas inc 1 Everett, Charlton SF, 1 Jaguar. Extra: Colour cover proof

British Comics Update: This Week’s #1: Victor 1961

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC24th October 2022

*Boys’ Adventure & War Comics: In the wake of the success of Hotspur, the venerable story paper that had relaunched as a comic two years previously, D C Thomson decided in 1961 that it was time for another boys’ weekly in a similar format – but rather than revamp another of their older titles, they made this an entirely new creation! The Victor #1 was cover-dated February 25th, and featured a mix of World War II heroics, sporting strips, and mild sci-fi adventure. A hit with its intended audience, it had a respectable 30+ year career. This is a lovely high grade copy, flat and virtually unmarked, with strong page quality, just a minor edge tear or two and very faint foxing. Sadly, no Free Gift Squirt Ring with this issue.

These new additions average very nice condition, nearly all better than FN, with many VF. Small degree of staple rust only on some, but most rust-free. Full details as always in our catalogue.

Books Update: Re-Working our Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror category: Poul Anderson and More

Posted on 22nd October 2022 by 30CC22nd October 2022

*Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror: We’re continuing to introduce the new layout for our books categories, with an image for each book. This week, we return to our Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror category, listing our stock by Poul Anderson, award-winning American science fiction and fantasy writer of Scandinavian descent. Anderson came to fame as a writer of so-called ‘hard’ science fiction, which, although rooted in technology, was shot through with humanity. Later perhaps, he produced many works of fantasy of great merit. A selection of his books are featured here, alongside a Pan Ballantine Adult Fantasy, Orlando Furioso by Aristo, a translation of a 16th century epic fantasy; also, Gulliver Of Mars (new in) by Edwin L Arnold, an inspiration for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Mars series, with a cover and interior art by Frank Frazetta.
