British Update: Spider-Mania: Early issues of Spider-Man Weekly

Posted on 19th December 2020 by 30CC19th December 2020

*Marvel UK: We’re always happy to see early issues of Marvel UK’s reprints of Spider-Man (as Spider-Man Weekly), this time between #11 and #45, reprinting in all but the later two issues classic issues of Ditko Amazing Spider-Man. From the mid-1970s, this is the version of Spidey that a lot of people grew up with, and many covers are different to the American originals. As a bonus, the series also reprinted early Thor stories. British Update: Picture Romances from Newnes

Posted on 19th December 2020 by 30CC19th December 2020

*Girls’ Picture Libraries: Sometime around 1966/67, Picture Romance Library truncated its name to Picture Romances and changed publisher from Pearson’s to Newnes. They retained, however, the annoying habit of only printing the issue number on the last interior page rather than on the cover! We have about a dozen of the Newnes version new in, with nice painted covers and generally in excellent, unread condition.

Books Update: What’s Old: Spotlight on Roger Zelazny

Posted on 19th December 2020 by 30CC19th December 2020

*Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror: What’s Old is our feature where we highlight stuff from our catalogue that you may have missed. Roger Zelazny, who died tragically young at 58 in 1995, is my favourite American science fiction author. I grew up reading his earlier, award-winning masterpieces such as A Rose for Ecclesiastes and The Doors Of His Face, The Lamps Of His Mouth (wonderful tales of Mars and Venus collected with many other gems in the anthology that bears the title of the second story) and He Who Shapes (a novella later expanded into the novel The Dream Master). In the latter, Zelazny touched on a theme he was to explore in great depth over future years; he often depicted characters from myth, set in a modern or future world, calling on several pantheons in various works: Egyptian in Creatures of Light and Darkness, Greek in This Immortal, Hindu in Lord of Light etc. But he will probably be most fondly remembered for his Amber series, a huge ten book epic that has all the Zelazny trademarks: mythologies, experimentation with form, an often clipped and laconic style more reminiscent of hard-boiled detective writers such as Chandler or Hammett and the tension between the ancient and the modern, surreal and familiar. Jack of Shadows (not part of Amber but very much in the same style) is a tour de force and the post-apocalyptic Damnation Alley was filmed (although not very well). Most of the titles mentioned are in stock in our catalogue, including the entire first five book sequence of Amber and many others. If you’ve not discovered Zelazny, I can recommend him as a wonderfully entertaining and imaginative author; I deeply regret that we are denied the continuation of his Amber series, which he evidently had planned.

American Update: Batmania: 200th Smash Issue

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*DC: On the cover of this landmark Anniversary issue, Batman & Robin, as depicted by Neal Adams, are holding up a bat symbol sign announcing ‘200th Smash Issue’ against a backdrop of classic Batman covers from the past. Within, there’s a classic encounter with the Scarecrow, cameo appearances by the Joker, the Penguin and Killer Moth and the origins of both Batman and Robin are retold. This is a lovely fresh high grade copy, pence stamped, with little wear, sharp corners, flat and tight with excellent staples and off-white pages.

American Update: Classic Superman cover on Action Comics #300

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*DC: For some unknown reason, Action Comics #300 seems to turn up far less often than all the issues around it. Maybe it’s because it’s got a corker of a cover and people who own it hang on to it. Whatever, Superman as the last man on Earth under a red sun is a classic scenario and story. This is a mid-grade cents copy, with good cover colour and gloss, a 2 cm lower spine split and a faint writing imprint on the sun! Great page quality and firmly attached staples.

American Update: Spider-Mania/Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Spider-Clone in Amazing #149

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*Marvel: I’m not even going to begin to relate the convoluted history of the Spider Clone/Ben Reilly saga that has seemingly carried on forever in the pages of Spider-Man (nor even the Gwen Stacy clone plot ditto), but suffice it to say that this is where the Spider-Clone story began, with the clone’s first appearance. This historic 149th issue also features (quote) ‘The Astonishing Climax of the Spidey-Jackal War’. A very nice superior copy with minor wear (one particular wear mark just in from top spine) but presenting very well.

American Update: Fantastic Four #50: Finale of Galactus/Surfer trilogy, 1st major Surfer cover

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*Marvel: As the premier series of the Marvel Universe, the Fantastic Four did seem to spend a lot of time incubating the stars of tomorrow, as their guests frequently spun off into their own titles. One of the most popular ‘break-out’ stars was the Silver Surfer, and in issue #50 the former Norrin Radd, having been introduced two issues previously as the minion of the planet-devouring Galactus, breaks away from his master and defends the threatened planet Earth. Cosmic menace, epic grandeur and, hm, college hi-jinks, as the Human Torch commences his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it struggle with higher education. The latter subplot introduces Johnny’s fellow student, Wyatt Wingfoot, soon a staunch ally of the FF. (As well as She-Hulk’s favourite squeeze-toy, but that was a couple of decades later…). This defining issue for the Surfer is lowish grade, pence printed, with moderate spine and edge wear, corner blunting, a colour breaking crease across the top right cover corner, a couple of very small cover edge tears and a tiny chip out of the bottom right cover. Nevertheless, firmly attached staples, reasonable pages and a largely unmarred cover image of the surfing dude!

American Update: What’s Old: Mighty Marvel Firsts: 1st Unus the Untouchable in X-Men #8 high grade

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*Marvel: What’s Old is our feature where we highlight stuff from our catalogue that you may have missed. A staggering array of inventive villains graced the X-Men’s first twenty or so issues: the Vanisher, the Blob, Magneto, Mastermind, the Stranger – each with an unusual twist to their abilities which suited the off-beat atmosphere of our mutant chums’ adventures. One such was Unus, introduced in the X-Men’s eighth issue, a villain who was literally untouchable – any force directed against him would be repelled, meaning that he could commit crimes in plain sight with impunity. Our mutant heroes were stymied, until – ah, but that would be telling! We have a high grade copy of this Lee/Kirby classic introduction of a major villain, a cents copy with no pence overstamp. White & bright, tight staples at cover and centrefold, sharp edges and corners, vibrant cover colour, with only the very faintest of stress lines around the upper staple area.

American Update: King Solomon’s Frog! Jack Kirby’s Bombastic Black Panther #1

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*Marvel: The Black Panther’s series in Jungle Action, which attracted a lot of acclaim at the time, was known for being verbose, introspective, reflective and philosophical. When the character’s co-creator, Jack Kirby, took over as writer and artist on T’Challa’s follow-up solo series, the results were… a considerable contrast. Shouting! Explosions! Aliens! Time-Travel! Implausibly-muscled ladies with black lipstick! Cosmic critters! All were here, and all playing at full volume all the time, in the crazed kinetic frenzy that Kirby was renowned for. Since the major movie hit, the King of Wakanda’s star is ever-ascendant, and this issue especially always sells very briskly because of its – frankly – high loopiness quotient. We have a copy of #1 fresh in, pence printed, mid-grade with edge and handling wear, but nice cover colour and gloss.

British Update: Free Gift Farrago: Twinkle with Nurse Nancy Outfit Take 2

Posted on 12th December 2020 by 30CC18th December 2020

*Girls’ Comics: The Nurse Nancy Outfit issued originally with Twinkle #105 must have proven so popular that DC Thomson issued it again later that same year in #146. This time it came packaged in a polythene envelope rather than the brown paper pictorial wrapper originally used, but still the same cap, apron and armbands set. With our FN condition copy of the comic, we have the Gift Set still sealed in its envelope. I doubt that there can be many (if any) of these in this pristine condition still in existence. Its rarity is attested by what appears to be the complete lack of sales records on all known (to us) internet sources. So, if you’ve worn out your existing Nurse Nancy Outfit from overuse, here’s your chance to get a nice new version. Described by our chum Duncan McAlpine in his Comic Book Price Guide for Great Britain as ‘clearly the greatest comics free gift of all time.’

Obituary: Richard Corben 1940-2020

Posted on 11th December 2020 by 30CC11th December 2020

Acclaimed and controversial underground comix artist, illustrator and animator Richard Corben died on December 2nd, 2020, aged 80, following heart surgery. His widow Dona Corben, the former Madonna Marchant, whom he married in 1965, posted the news via Corben’s frequent collaborator Jack Strnad:

“It is with great sorrow and loss that I must share the sad news that Richard Corben died Dec 2, 2020 following heart surgery. He will be missed tremendously by his family, his friends, and his fans.

Richard was very appreciative of the love for his art that was shown by you, his fans. Your support over the decades meant a great deal to him. He tried to repay your support by working diligently on each piece of art going out to you. Although Richard has left us, his work will live on and his memory will live always in our hearts.”

Born in Anderson, Missouri, Corben achieved a Batchelor of Arts from Kansas City Art Institute.  After working as a professional animator – in which capacity he met his future wife while working on her short film, Siegfried Saves Metropolis – Corben joined the burgeoning field of underground comics, including Grim Wit, Slow Death, Skull, Rowlf, Fever Dreams and his own anthology Fantagor.

In 1970 he began illustrating horror and science-fiction stories for Warren Publishing and in 1975 became a frequent contributor to Heavy Metal, the English-language version of Metal Hurlant.

Perhaps his most famous creation is the fantasy series Den, about a frail young boy who travels to an alternate universe and is recreated as a prodigiously-endowed naked barbarian who battles monsters for the attentions of a succession of equally unfeasibly-proportioned and underdressed ladies. Corben’s frank and enthusiastic attitude towards nudity, eroticism and violent physicality won him notoriety and acclaim in equal measure, but his lush colour palette, expert finishes and skilful use of shadow and line were universally praised.

The winner of multiple awards over the decades, he also illustrated record covers (including Meatloaf’s Bat Out of Hell) and film posters, and occasionally dabbled in ‘borderline’ mainstream series, including DC/Vertigo’s Hellblazer, Marvel’s Startling Stories: Banner, and Punisher: The End, and a controversial reimagining of Luke Cage for Marvel’s short-lived Vertigo-wannabe Epic Line.

Preproduction work on an animated film adapted from his underground comic Fever Dreams was announced in May 2020.

American Update: Batmania/DC Debuts : 1st and 2nd Appearances of Poison Ivy

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*DC: ‘Poison Ivy, Poison Ivy
Well late at night when you’re sleepin’
Poison Ivy comes a creepin’ all around’
Batman #181 featured the debut of one of the Gotham Guardian’s most famous female nemeses. Poison Ivy was brainstormed with the idea of joining the hugely-popular TV show as a younger recurring villain – most of the villainesses, aside from Catwoman, being, let’s be kind, ladies of a certain age, it was thought a fresher face was needed! She sadly never made it onto the small screen – at least not in that decade – but the comics audience caught Poison Ivy with a vengeance, and she’s remained a staple of the Batman Rogue’s Gallery ever since, her profile being considerably upped in recent years by her status as Harley Quinn’s… well, the jury’s out, but let’s say very good friend. At least. A recurring role in the ‘Gotham’ TV series has also spurred demand for Ivy’s early appearances over the last few years. Fresh in this week is both #181 with her 1st appearance and #183, featuring her rather swift return! This Batman #181 is a very nice pence stamped copy, with vibrant cover colour and gloss, very little wear, tight and firmly attached staples and good page quality. It would grade much higher were it not for a small chip out of the lower right edge of the cover (see scan); most importantly the centrefold pin-up (frequently missing, depriving the second story of its splash page) is firmly in place! #183 is in a very similar condition, but without the chip! The dynamic Carmine Infantino covers on both don’t hurt any, either!

American Update: Spider-Mania ‘Away Games’: Guest shots in Silver Surfer #14 & X-Men #35

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC5th December 2020

*Marvel: Back in the Silver Age, Spidey guest appearances in other characters’ series weren’t all that common, and thus were rather special when they did occur. Two such cases for your consideration this week: Spidey clashed with the Silver Surfer in issue #14 of the surfing dude’s own title, and with the X-Men in #35 of the merry mutants’ book (I guess he was just misunderstood). Silver Surfer #14 is a nice pence printed copy with minor spine wear and minor non-colour breaking creasing, while X-Men #35 (pence printed) is a solid mid-grade with some edge wear and corner blunting, firm staples and a small crease at bottom right edge which does not break colour.

American Update: Eternals Complete #2-18 plus Annual

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC12th December 2020

*Marvel: Following his 1976 return to Marvel, the legendary Jack Kirby was anxious not to get trapped in the cycle of just illustrating super-heroes again, and one of his conditions was that he would be allowed to write and draw his own concepts. How much of the Eternals concept was his is, politely, open to debate; heavily ‘influenced’ (ahem, ahem) by the popular Erich Von Daniken paperbacks, which postulated that mankind’s ancient ‘Gods’ were alien visitors, Kirby’s Eternals portrayed the return of ancient immortal extraterrestrials, and the cataclysmic repercussions for humanity. Originally intended to stand apart from the Marvel Universe, it was shoehorned in at editorial insistence, which resulted in Kirby eventually abandoning the strip mid-narrative. Because of this dissonance, the Eternals have been comparatively overlooked by all but the most diehard Kirby Kollectors, but with the confirmation of an Eternals movie, prices are spiralling. Every issue (except #1 and #19, the final issue) fresh into stock this week in a variety of grades and prices, but mostly high grade. As always, consult our catalogue for full details.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Bullseye in Daredevil #131

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC5th December 2020

*Marvel: In the Frank Miller era of Daredevil, Bullseye, the unfailing assassin, became firmly established as DD’s bête noire, causing the Man Without Fear endless grief and misery. And can we ever forget Colin Farrell’s epic scenery-chewing as Bullseye in the Daredevil movie? Well, maybe if we’re lucky and get hit in the head with a blunt object. But a lot of people, even today, aren’t aware that Bullseye wasn’t a Miller creation; step forward Marv Wolfman and Bob Brown, who presented The Assassin Who Never Misses for the first time in Daredevil #131, two years before the Miller regime kicked in! This new copy in is a lower grade, superficially nice with cover gloss, good staples and decent pages and just a bit of handling wear and minor creasing to the bottom right corner; however, something has been spilt at the right edge of the mast-head, resulting in a tiny hole and a small 1p coin size rough patch that you can’t see but can feel.

*Marvel: Published in 1994, the series Marvels ran over four books covering the 1939 to 1974 time period, examining the development of the Marvel Universe from the perspective of an Everyman character, news photographer Phil Sheldon. The evocative series portrayed ordinary life in a world full of costumed supermen, with each issue featuring events well known to readers of Marvel comics, as well as a variety of minute details and a retelling of the most famous events in Marvel history. Lovingly scripted by Kurt Busiek and lavishly painted by Alex Ross, this series transcended the vintage/modern divide and provided an experience both generations could appreciate. Various hardcover and paperback collections have remained steadily in print since the series concluded, but these are the originals. Issues #1 to #4, plus the subsequent ‘coda’ #0, are available for sale as a set.

American Update: Atlas Seaboard Bonanza!

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC7th December 2020

*Miscellaneous 1960 Onwards: A large top-up to our stock of Atlas Seaboard comics published in 1975. In the 1980s and 1990s, new universes were quite commonplace (Valiant, Ultraverse, Defaint etc), but back in 1975 a whole new comic group launch competing with DC & Marvel was quite a bold and innovative move. Sadly, this project helmed by Marvel’s founder Martin Goodman was doomed to failure, and none of the 28 comic and magazine titles lasted more than 4 issues, despite having stellar names involved such as Wood, Ditko, Chaykin, Adams, Heath, Severin, Toth and more. But in 2019 a new Atlas company was formed amid rumours of movie franchise options from 2021 onwards. A bumper selection of Atlas Seaboard titles new in this week, including the Brute, the Destructor, the Grim Ghost, Ironjaw, Moorlock 2001, Phoenix, Planet Of Vampires, Tiger-Man and Wulf the Barbarian, many #1 issues among them. See our catalogue for our full listings of all our Atlas Seaboard stock.

American Update: What’s Old: Mighty Marvel Firsts! Blade the Vampire Slayer in Tomb of Dracula #10

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC5th December 2020

*Horror/Mystery 1960-1980s: What’s Old is our feature where we highlight stuff from our catalogue that you may have missed. By its tenth issue, Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan’s highly acclaimed run on Tomb of Dracula was in full swing, racking up plaudits from critics and fans alike, when suddenly there came a character who was to outstrip even the success of his comic book ‘parent’. Blade the Vampire Slayer debuted in issue #10, and, numerous comic-book appearances and a highly successful movie trilogy (Marvel’s first such, in fact) behind him, remains one of the more enduring breakthrough characters of the 1970s. With the Blade franchise shortly about to be ‘rebooted’, in the media’s voracious frenzy for new properties, Blade’s early appearances are once more spiralling upward. This is a cents copy, no UK price or overstamp, in superior VF+ condition, excellent cover colour and gloss, fresh and supple, firm staples at spine and centrefold, tiny crease in upper right cover corner and small faint arrival date at side of the logo. Front, back and splash shown below; high resolution images are available on request.

Ranging from the first in 1985, through to 1988, these have all the horror (and wit) of the comic, but printed on considerably better paper! ‘Not for the nervous!’

British Update: Dandy: the Less Common Years 1963-64

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC18th December 2020

*Humour Comics: Like its cousin the Beano, issues of the Dandy from the early 1960s are less often seen than earlier or later issues due to lower print runs, so we’re particularly chuffed to have dozens of issues fresh in from 1963 and 1964, years barely represented in our catalogue for sometime previously. Included are Fireworks and Christmas issues for 1963 and New Year, Easter and April Fool issues for 1964. Most of these are superior copies in nicer than average condition. Your early attention is recommended.

British Update: Near compete run of Lindy

Posted on 5th December 2020 by 30CC18th December 2020

*Girls’ Comics: Lindy was a bit of an anomaly for Fleetway/IPC, published on better quality paper and with more colour pages than the average weekly, seemingly attempting to straddle the gap between the usual girls’ comic and the teen magazines, with a heavy emphasis on TV and pop. The experiment doesn’t appear to have been successful, as, after a scant twenty issues, it was merged into Jinty. While Lindy didn’t offer any ‘star’ features – the comedy filler ‘Penny Crayon’ was the longest-lived of its strips – its short achievable run, and the fact that the plethora of pin-ups mean that undamaged copies are rare, means that today it’s highly collectable. We welcome an almost complete run to our catalogue, including the first three and final issues.

Super-Housekeeping Update

Posted on 30th November 2020 by 30CC30th November 2020

Since we’re now trading by mail order only, it gives us the chance to maintain our catalogue even more accurately. All items sold since lockdown are now being deleted within a few days of sale. We are also working through our entire catalogue to delete those items that sold pre-lockdown since files were last updated. This means that as we finish updating a file, you can rely on the catalogue for that category being (and staying) as close to 100% accurate as it is possible to get, with virtually everything available, apart from items sold in the last few days (and just a tiny amount of human error). We have now completed this exercise for the following category from our Books section:
*TV/Film Tie-Ins
All categories down to this point in our Catalogue Index have now been Super-Housekept! We will continue to post here as we make progress.

American Update: DC Debuts: The complete Zatanna’s Search inc 1st appearance in Hawkman #4

Posted on 28th November 2020 by 30CC7th December 2020

*DC: Now we’re straying dangerously close here to my all-time favourite comics! Absolutely delighted to bring you all 6 parts of the Zatanna’s Search storyline – a crossover story arc before there were such things — commonplace now but unheard of in 1964! A particularly timely update bearing in mind strong movie rumours! Zatanna is the daughter of DC’s Golden Age magician Zatara, first appearing in Hawkman #4 and taking her search for her missing father through the pages of Green Lantern, Atom, Detective Comics and the Justice League of America. Our latest copy of Hawkman #4 is an apparent VG-, pence stamped, with a good colour cover image, tight staples and decent pages. There is some edge wear, particularly to the spine, and some colour-breaking creases to the bottom right corner. We use the term ‘apparent’ because the right edge looks a little narrower than it should, suggesting a trim, although the wear at that edge would seem to contradict that. Nevertheless, we have priced it as if it was trimmed. The remaining five parts are shown below in order (completists should note that Zatanna only appears in disguise in Detective Comics #336, retconned into the Batman story, as we found out in JLA #51, in order to get Batman into that issue).

American Update: A Babe, a Board and a Bike! 3rd Teen Titans in Showcase #59

Posted on 28th November 2020 by 30CC28th November 2020

*DC: Following their two try-out adventures in Brave & Bold, the Teen Titans switched to Showcase for their 3rd appearance. In this they encounter an apparent teenage criminal gang (or are they?) named the Flips, whose theme song: ‘We’re just a Babe, a Board and a Bike’ somehow still resonates down the years. I love the DC writers and editors getting down with the kids. The gorgeous art of Nick Cardy adorns this issue, and indeed his was the definitive look for the Teen Titans in these early years. A gorgeous high grade pence stamped copy with lustrous cover colour and gloss, flat and tight with firmly attached staples and excellent white to off-white pages. Just minor stress marks at the spine prevent an even higher grade.

American Update: Batmania: New Look plus Annuals

Posted on 28th November 2020 by 30CC28th November 2020

*DC: In 1964, with issue #164, newly transferred editor Julius Schwartz ushered in the ‘New Look’ for Batman; the Caped Crusader gained a yellow circle around the bat emblem on his chest and the tone of the stories changed to emphasize mystery and crime, away from the science-fiction tales so often employed in the ‘Old Look’, with monsters, aliens, super-powered villains and the Batman Family, including Alfred, Batwoman, Bat-Girl and Ace the Bat-Hound. This update we focus on the ‘New Look’, from the first issue (#164) up to #192 — more mystery, more detection, more action; lots of really nice grades among these and lots of lovely Carmine Infantino covers to boot. But there’s still plenty of ‘Old Look’ charm to be found in those wonderful 80 page reprint annuals, several of which are included in this update under the Annual sequential numbering at the end of our Batman listing.
