American Update: Dell Movie Classic: Dr. Who and the Daleks

Posted on 10th July 2021 by 30CC12th July 2021

*Dell: I remember as a youngster going to see the Dr. Who and the Daleks film in 1965, and the thrill of seeing the Daleks in colour. Even then, I recall being puzzled by the fact that this Dr. Who (Peter Cushing) was not William Hartnell (this was before the days of regenerations). But without worrying about canon, the film was one to enjoy in its own right, adapting Terry Nation’s very first Dalek story from the TV series. Equally enjoyable is the adaptation of the same story in the first American comic (from 1966) to feature the franchise. Co-scripted by Terry Nation with art by Dick Giordano and Sal Tapani. This copy has a worn cover, but is intact except for a small chip out of the bottom right corner edge with a small crease above it. Off top staple, but otherwise tight and flat; very nice page quality. There are the remnants of a small water stain at the back left cover edge and in the margin of the last few pages, but overall an iconic comic that presents well and something I think we’ve only seen once before in 30 years.

American Update: Pre-Code Horror Fest: Diary Of Horror

Posted on 10th July 2021 by 30CC12th July 2021

*Horror 1940-1959: One of Avon’s famous one-shots, this time from 1952, this accomplished anthology featured a haunting cover by Hollingsworth, as well as interior art by him, Nodel, Alascia and Nicholas, with a stunning inside front cover prelude by Kintsler. Very distinctive and self-contained. This copy’s worst failing is some central creasing to front and back covers (possibly due to historic water damage, but no staining) with relatively minor colour-breaking creasing to the right edge and a couple of small white scuff marks mid right edge cover. There is some spine roll, but nice cover colour and some gloss. Overall not a bad copy, with nice pages.

British Update: Alan Class Plate Sets Final Phase

Posted on 10th July 2021 by 30CC10th July 2021

*Alan Class Reprints: For many years now, we’ve been scouring the personal archives of legendary publisher Alan Class (who is still very much with us) and with his full co-operation, releasing for sale sets of the original printing plates that were used to print the covers of his comics from 1959-1989. We have now reached the final phase of these plate set releases, which will last us through 2021 and probably into 2022. These sets are time-consuming to prepare, so our release schedule will be staggered. But the good news is that all the sets we have left are among the best, either featuring a classic Marvel comic reprint, or else a very early fantasy/mystery issue. So, this final phase represents your last opportunity to add one or more of these unique pieces to your collection. Each set comprises the lead printing plates used in the original comic’s colour printing, a copy of the comic printed with these plates and a signed certificate of authenticity signed by Alan Class himself. These are packaged in a special protective presentation case. Several sets (as noted) have additional historical artefacts such as colour proofs, interior page plates, printers’ photostats etc. (Please be aware that these weigh a lot and postage will be expensive. Also note that due to the onerous paperwork required for customs declarations following Brexit, we can no longer post these Plate Sets outside the UK.) We continue this week with three more sets, details as follows:
SECRETS OF THE UNKNOWN #125 £80 Comic: FN Reprints Amazing Spider-Man #76 inc cover plus Atlas, Charlton, ACG. Extra: Colour cover proof
SINISTER TALES #53 £95 Comic: VG Reprints Daredevil #5 by Wally Wood inc cover plus Atlas (1 Everett), Charlton, pre-hero Marvel  (1 Ditko) Extra: Colour cover proof (torn and taped with part logo missing)
UNCANNY TALES #4 £50 Comic FN+ Reprints Charlton & Atlas, 1 Captain Video.

Books Update: Blitz Books: Pocket Series

Posted on 10th July 2021 by 30CC13th July 2021

*Childrens’ Books: A further update from this quirky sidebar in publishing history this week. ‘Blitz Books’ is a generic name for various publishers’ series of miniature books (approx 8.5 x 12 cm, around 16 pages, and published 1940-1944), these booklets helped distract children in air-raid shelters and Underground stations during bombing raids over London. They became known as ‘Blitz Books’, and, like many publications from the years of World War II, are quite scarce, particularly in as nice condition as the examples we have here. Four from the Pocket Series, illustrated text stories with colourful, evocative covers. None of these have ever passed through our hands before.

Relocation Update: Stage 1 Complete

Posted on 4th July 2021 by 30CC4th July 2021

READY AND WAITING

ALL PACKED UP WITH SOMEWHERE TO GO

Today we’ve moved all the stock from the ground floor of the shop to our new unit. As you can see the comics couldn’t wait to get going! The first two photos are from yesterday at the shop and at our new unit.

And, in the third photo, here they all are today in their new home, with about half our stock moved. Before too long they’ll be joined by the basement crew in the second and final stage of our relocation – we’ll let you know of course, and then we should be more or less back to normal (or as close as we can get)!

IN THEIR NEW HOME

In the meantime, we’ll be pausing for breath with some small updates to our stock and a newsletter next weekend, before girding ourselves up for Stage 2.

Having stretched ourselves way beyond the call of duty, myself, Dr. Evilla and our trusty sub-minion are all sloping off home for a beverage of choice and a little lie down.

Back soon!

Rob

American Update: Justice League Of America #25 FN/VF

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC28th June 2021

*DC: A classic issue of the Justice League of America lined up for you today. Issue #25 was where Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky started rotating the roll call, realising that with the increasing membership it was getting harder and harder to fit every member into every story. Thus here we have an exciting science fiction interdimensional adventure starring Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Atom. A lovely pence-stamped copy, with an otherwise clean and unmarked cover, firm staples, great colour and off-white pages; just very minor spine wear and a slight blunting at a couple of corners keep the grade down, but a copy that would be a joy to own.

American Update: Quirky Corner: Rex the Wonder Dog with Detective Chimp

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC28th June 2021

*DC: One of the quirkiest of all DC titles from the 1950s was Rex The Wonder Dog (the Adventures of). Rex doesn’t have any super-powers, but he did have adventures, together with his owner Danny Dennis. In this issue (#24), for example he becomes an honorary Indian chief (as you do). Backed up by the famous Bobo the Detective Chimp, with lovely art on Rex by Gil Kane and Carmine Infantino on Bobo. A very decent copy for 1955, with great 1950s DC cover colour; some edge and spine wear, but no damage. As a bonus, we also have it bundled with an awful but free copy of #22, which is completely brittle with every page separate, but hey, the price is right! We haven’t seen any issues of this series for a long time, so there aren’t too many out there.

American Update: Mighty Marvels Firsts: The Guardians Of The Galaxy

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC26th June 2021

*Marvel: In the year 3007, the countries of the world are brought together in the United Lands of Earth, spreading the Terran empire throughout the known galaxy – when interplanetary harmony is disrupted by the arrival of the voracious Badoon, who overcome Earth and her dominions, leaving only a few scattered freedom fighters to battle on – the Guardians of the Galaxy! Such was the premise of the original story created by Arnold Drake (writer of the Doom Patrol, another popular band of outcasts) and Gene Colan in issue #18 of Marvel Super-Heroes, January 1969. A powerful and moving story, it lay dormant for some years, until revived by Steve Gerber in the Seventies, whereupon the Guardians became a regular, if infrequent, part of the Marvel Universe, before the movie versions (featuring, it must be said, an entirely different cast) catapulted the title back into public consciousness. This is a high grade copy cents copy, with good gloss, deep and attractive cover colour, supple and tightly squarebound with firm staples. Pages are an excellent off-white and there are only vague suggestions of wear at the edges and corners. On very close inspection, there is a ghost of a crease across the bottom right corner, no hint of colour break and only visible in a certain light; due to this, we have graded it quite conservatively. High resolution images are available on request.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Red Sonja

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC26th June 2021

*Marvel: Forget the Frank Thorne drawn daft ha’p’orth in the chainmail bikini – the proper Red Sonja, who, you know, wore clothes and had a brain, made her first appearance in issue #23 of Conan’s title (Marvel rather dropping the ball by not having her on the cover, but we promise you, she’s in there) and truly making her mark in #24’s sumptuous epic ‘The Song of Red Sonja!’ wherein our heroine does a great deal more than sing, proving herself Conan’s equal, if not superior. Sadly, the popularity of Sonja’s appearances in these two issues led Marvel to produce a more sexualised and less competent version of the character for her solo series – but these stories, by Roy Thomas and superbly drawn by Barry Smith, remain as good as ever! These are both high grade pence printed copies, with great cover colour and gloss, tight, firm staples and nice pages, with just minimal edge wear.

American Update: What’s Old: Marvel Spotlight #7, 3rd Ghost Rider, high grade

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC26th June 2021

*Marvel: What’s Old is our feature where we highlight stuff from our catalogue that you may have missed. Johnny Blaze made his third outing as the Ghost Rider in Marvel Spotlight #7. Following his debut as the Satanic stunt-biker, he gathered momentum – as one would expect – and tore through a series of supernatural adventures until issue #11, after which he ceded the Marvel Spotlight gig to Son of Satan, and Johnny B. and span out into his own successful 80+ issue series. This is a superior copy of #7, courtesy of his creator ‘Groovy’ Gary Friedrich and artist Mike Ploog. A glossy, shiny cover with a black border surrounding the image, great colour, tight and flat with firm staples and nice off-white pages. A couple of very minor spine ticks and a small dink to the upper spine corner are all that prevent an even higher grade on this lovely cents copy.

American Update: 3 Thor key issues tying into Loki TV series

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC26th June 2021

*Marvel: One of the most noticeable things about supply and demand is how a TV or film appearance (or indeed a rumour of one) can turn a standard issue of a title into a high demand item. Here are three such issues of Thor, all in decent grade. #245 is the first appearance of He Who Remains, #282 the first appearance of the Time Keepers, and #372 the first appearance of the Time Variance Authority. American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Modred the Mystic

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC28th June 2021

*Marvel: In 1975, Marvel added a new magical character to their pantheon in the shape of Modred the Mystic, who debuted in Marvel Chillers #1 & #2. Modred has since appeared many times throughout the Marvel Universe, both as an anti-hero and super-villain, and his history has often been linked to Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, as well as many of Marvel’s mystic characters. Marvel Chillers #1 is a lovely pence printed copy, shiny and glossy, great off-white pages and firmly attached staples with minor spine tick and handling wear; #2 is very similar, with perhaps a tad more handling wear and a little corner blunting.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Western Ghost Rider

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC28th June 2021

*Western: The name Ghost Rider has been around since 1950 when it was used by Magazine Enterprises in their famous first rendition of the ‘spooky’ Western hero. Marvel reinvented the character in 1967 in his own title, although visually he was much the same as his predecessor. Like most Marvel key issues, this hasn’t escaped a significant price-hike in recent years. Not a great copy here, pence printed with moderate edge wear and more than moderate spine wear; there is a faint book shop stamp centre cover (on GR’s horse!). A bit dingy, but good staples and okay pages; not a beauty, but not a wreck either.

British Update: It’s jolly old Captain Britain (1st series)

Posted on 26th June 2021 by 30CC28th June 2021

*Marvel UK: Marvel UK’s unprecedented and experimental attempt to broaden their readership by generating a new British hero, Captain Britain, was the subject of much controversy, not least because he was created by two Americans (Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe) who, from the evidence presented here, had never met an English person, and whose interpretation of the UK’s manners and mores made the Austin Powers films look like documentaries. Be that as it may, the character endured to become a respected icon of the medium, and these issues are now attracting keen collector attention. Many issues of the first series new in this week, between #3 and #31, inc #19 (1st Lance Hunter, aka ‘Mr. Mockingbird’ from Marvels ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ television series) plus the 1980 Summer Special.

Alan Austin, Author

Posted on 24th June 2021 by 30CC24th June 2021

In 2017 we reported on the sad loss of Alan, a mainstay of the comic and book dealing worlds. Alan (AKA the Guv’nor) was one of the most respected figures in UK comic book fandom who did much to inspire and enthuse many others in the field.

He was the first full-time comics dealer in the UK, and published many fanzines about American comic books throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, including Fantasy Unlimited (later Comics Unlimited), the first Comic Book Price Guide for Great Britain, the Golden Age fanzine and the DC and Marvel Comics Indexes.

It fell to his friend Nigel Brown to edit and publish two of his works, firstly a book about comics (Comics Unlimited: My life as a Comic Collector and Dealer) and secondly a collection of short stories (The Adventures of Bernie Burrows, Bookseller) loosely based on his own book dealing experiences.

Both are now available as paperbacks or ebooks from Amazon. We’ve included the synopsis of each book below.

Comics Unlimited: My life as a Comic Collector and Dealer

This book details Alan’s life in comics, and his experiences as a comic collector and dealer from the early days of comic book fandom, beginning in the 1960s.

Alan later became a respected book dealer.

The Adventures of Bernie Burrows, Bookseller

Bernie Burrows is a reader, collector, and seller of books.

His world is populated by people struggling through the calamities of life, as is Bernie himself. But Bernie doggedly pursues his vocation despite growing competition from other bookdealers and websites, and an increasingly difficult public.

Join Bernie as he risks a late night opening of his bookshop in the hope of ‘the big sale’, encounters the phantom book-leaver, faces a life-or-death locked room mystery he has to solve, sets off on an expedition across the streets of Chicago in search of dust-jacketed treasure, and many more adventures.

We can heartily recommend both books. Alan was an entertaining writer and his acerbic wit shines through in everything he did. These serve as a testament to his memory and a reminder of how much the comic and book worlds miss him.

American Update: DC Debuts: Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth #1 by Kirby

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*DC: Following his critically-acclaimed ‘Fourth World’ series of intersecting titles at DC, Jack Kirby branched out into three stand-alone series. One such was Kamandi, a.k.a. ‘The Last Boy On Earth’, doubtless influenced by the then-ongoing Planet of the Apes phenomenon. Kamandi showed a post-apocalyptic future in which all humanity apart from our titular hero had degraded to virtual beasts, oppressed by all manner of super-evolved animals. Later attempts by other, lesser talents have been made to link this in with the greater DC Universe, but most folk prefer to think of the original 59 issue run from 1972 to 1978 as a self-contained odyssey. We have issue #1 of this cult series, a cents copy with no pence price or overstamp, in high grade with great cover colour and gloss, nice staples and pages, tight and flat with only the most minimal wear.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Mephisto in Silver Surfer #3

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*Marvel: Fans rave about the Giant-Size issues of the first run of the Silver Surfer from 1968 and a lot of attention is paid in particular to #1 & #4. For our money, John Buscema’s wonderful art has never looked more sumptuous than in #3, the debut of Mephisto, Marvel’s devil-like netherworld overlord, in particular the depictions of his domain. We have a decent enough copy new in; this is pence stamped (twice, as a bonus!), but neither over the cover central image; the upper stamp has a small label-size discolouration patch over it where a label has been removed (see scan). Other than that, the spine is intact but for a 1 cm split at base, the cover colour and gloss are good, the staples excellent and the page quality very nice. Edge wear is fairly minimal apart from two colour-breaking creases across the bottom right corner. These Surfer giants have certainly shot up in value of late, and show no signs of slowing.

American Update: Journey Into Mystery #112: Thor vs the Hulk plus the origin of Loki

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*Marvel: By coincidence, a lot of the Marvel new stock this week features various heroes’ encounters with the Hulk — ‘Let’s All Gang Up On The Hulk!’, so to speak. We lead off with Journey Into Mystery #112, one of the scarcer early Thor appearances, at least here in the Old Country, an oddball ‘untold tale’ flashing back to the events of Avengers #3. Intervening in a dispute between fans of the Hulk and Thor, the Thunder God himself responds to the question of who’s stronger by narrating an extended ‘Director’s Cut’ of the previous skirmish between himself and old Jade-Jaws in said Avengers issue. Apparently intended to ‘big up’ the profile of the Hulk – who was at that point homeless, a wandering villain without his own series – this ‘extended remix’ story is superbly told by Lee and Kirby, and in the back, ‘Tales of Asgard’ relates the origin of Loki, now of course more significant than ever. Only lightly distributed in the UK for unknown reasons, this is scarcer here than its contemporaries, although this specific copy is a pence stamped mid-grade copy. It’s nice and flat, with great cover colour and some gloss, and only minor wear at the edges and spine and tight, firm staples. Nice off-white pages; some minor corner blunting. It’s a shame there is a felt-tip ‘6’ marked across the ‘R’ in the logo (see scan); otherwise a higher grade would have been awarded.

American Update: King Solomon’s Frog! Jack Kirby’s Bombastic Black Panther #1

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*Marvel: The Black Panther’s series in Jungle Action, which attracted a lot of acclaim at the time, was known for being verbose, introspective, reflective and philosophical. When the character’s co-creator, Jack Kirby, took over as writer and artist on T’Challa’s follow-up solo series, the results were… a considerable contrast. Shouting! Explosions! Aliens! Time-Travel! Implausibly-muscled ladies with black lipstick! Cosmic critters! All were here, and all playing at full volume all the time, in the crazed kinetic frenzy that Kirby was renowned for. Since the major movie hit, the King of Wakanda’s star is ever-ascendant, and this issue especially always sells very briskly because of its – frankly – high loopiness quotient. So, if you want this tale of ‘King Solomon’s Frog’, you’d better hop to it (sorry…) A nice high grade pence printed copy, with great colour cover and gloss, nice white to off-white pages and tight staples; just minor signs of reading wear at edges and corners.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Madame Hydra in Captain America #110

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC19th June 2021

*Marvel: Let’s All Gang Up On The Hulk! It’s Cap’s turn – what a landmark issue is Captain America #110. Rick Jones takes on the Bucky identity and teams up with Cap against the Hulk. Marvel’s movie star villainess Madame Hydra makes her debut. And all this at the hands of writer/artist Jim Steranko, one of the most stylish creators ever to grace the pages of Marvel comics; I don’t think I’ve ever since the fury of the Hulk so vividly depicted. A very nice above average pence-stamped copy, great cover colour and gloss, firmly attached staples. The spine has some wear, but nothing too bad; minor corner blunting. A classic.

American Update: What’s Old: Iron Man #9 from the Square Mile Collection

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC19th June 2021

*Marvel: What’s Old is our feature where we highlight stuff from our catalogue that you may have missed. It’s Iron Man’s turn in ‘Let’s All Gang Up On The Hulk!’. In issue #9 of his own series, Iron Man faces off against the Hulk (or does he? You’ll have to read it to find out) as arranged by the Mandarin. George Tuska’s art, as inked here by EC alumnus Jonny Craig, has seldom looked better. This is a lovely Square Mile specimen, tight, flat, sharp, glossy and reflective, with just the tiniest nick to the right edge preventing an even higher grade. White pages and firm staples.

*Horror 1940-1959: In our regular pre-code horror feature this week, we present five more issues of Fawcett’s This Magazine Is Haunted, famous for its horrific covers. Hosted by Dr. Death in a shameless bit of nominative determinism, the series went on to be published by Charlton from #15 onwards. These issues are mostly low grade, with the faults (and features of particular interest) being described below for each issue.

British Update: Alan Class Tales Of The Underworld

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC19th June 2021

*Alan Class Reprints: something a little more unusual in our Alan Class update this week, the short-lived crime series Tales Of The Underworld, running to only ten issues in all. We have five of these newly added to our regular stock section, all Charlton/Fawcett reprints, featuring the following recurring characters: Public Defender In Action, Judy Jones Powderpuff Reporter, Rookie Cop, Mike Danger, Johnny Adventure and Inspector Farnsworth of Scotland Yard. A thematic Alan Class rarity! Full details in our catalogue.

British Update: Super-Detective Library #1 with the Saint

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*Boys’ Adventure & War Picture Libraries: In our close-on 30 years of trading, I don’t think we’ve ever had a copy of Super-Detective Library #1 through our hands before, so we’re particularly pleased to have such a nice copy as this new in this week. Starring Simon Templar AKA the Saint in ‘The Case of the Contraband People’, this flat and unmarked copy has good colour and an intact, solid spine, with great pages and little more than a hint of rust at the staple. Fairly sharp corners and just a trace of a soft crease on the back cover. This historic issue is worthy of any collection.

British Update: Your Wish Is Our Commando: More From The Stapled Collection

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC19th June 2021

*Boys’ Adventure & War Picture Libraries: Following on from previous releases of earlier numbers, we now have many issues between #152 & #197 of Commando War Stories In Pictures from the same source. A previous owner at some point decided to place two to four reinforcing staples through the spine, quite skilfully so as to not hamper the opening of the item nor hide any of the content; there is minimal bleed from these staples and the page quality is really rather nice. As we move up the numbers, the overall condition quality improves, so in most cases, the grade is assigned through wear rather than specific defects. Please consult our catalogue for full details.

British Update: True Life Library x 10

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*Girls’ Picture Libraries: From 1966, ten more issues of True Life Library (All In Pictures), between #511-524. Released right in the middle of ‘Swingin’ London’, the usual nurses, models and actresses are bolstered by somewhat more liberated heroines, including aviatrixes, monarchs and spies – oh my! With very accomplished art from mainly European illustrators, these are lovely items, their appeal enhanced by the fact that they are from a newsagent’s reserve stock, never sold or circulated, with white pages, bright covers and minimal or no discolouration in the staple areas, averaging VG/FN. Full details as always in our catalogue.

Books Update: Sexton Blake Library with David Wright covers

Posted on 19th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*Crime, Spies & Sleaze: Often dubbed ‘the poor man’s Sherlock Holmes’, there’s still no doubting the popularity of Sexton Blake, who has probably had far more fiction written of him than the world’s greatest detective. In the Crime, Spies and Sleaze category of our Books section, we have four new digests from the famous Sexton Blake Library. These are picture library sized, but mainly text. The series ran from 1915 to 1968, and these date from the late 1950s (we think), following the 1956 revamp by W Howard Baker when the covers took on a more gangster/sleazy mode and were drawn by notable artists, such as David Wright who concerns us here. David Wright was a book jacket and commercial artist whose work graced many a cover at the time and is highly collected today. Four examples are shown here (we’re not 100% sure that #355 is his work, but it certainly looks like it; the others are confirmed and listed in a book on Wright). Condition is pretty good on all these, with the obligatory rusty staple in evidence to varying degrees.

American Update: Batmania: Batman #125 (1959)

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC14th June 2021

*DC: Three excellent Batman stories await you inside this colourful sci-fi cover from Curt Swan; two are pencilled by Sheldon Moldoff (one co-starring Batwoman and Bat-Hound) and the third (cover story) by Dick Sprang, my favourite Batman artist of the period. This is a decent, pre-distribution copy with some edge wear and creasing, good colour, nice page quality and firm staples. There are faint vestiges of pencil marks (now erased) over the letters of the cover logo. Note that we also have a VG copy in stock, which is only slightly higher in price.

American Update: Kingdom Come: Complete 1996 4 issue series painted by Alex Ross

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC22nd June 2021

*DC: Although a bit ‘modern’ by our normal standards, this landmark Elseworlds mini-series is of such a high quality that we couldn’t leave it out of our catalogue. Four deluxe squarebound issues, written by fan favourite writer Mark Waid and painted (covers AND interiors) by fan favourite artist Alex Ross, Kingdom Come presents a powerful tale of the entire DCU and a future that may or may not come to pass. If you’ve not read this nor feasted your eyes on the superlative artwork, do yourself a favour and get to your electronic communication device of choice and rush off an email to us now. Who knows? You might be first!

American Update: Wolverine #1-4 Complete 1982 Mini-Series by Claremont & Miller

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC14th June 2021

*Marvel: Perhaps surprisingly, Wolverine had been around quite few years before he starred in his own title. (Even after this 1982 mini-series, it would be a further 6 years before Logan got his own ongoing solo title). You can’t say that Marvel were milking the character’s popularity – a phrase I thought I’d never write. But they did pull out all the stops with this mini, combining X-Men scribe Chris Claremont with super-star artist Frank Miller in this tale of the Yakuza and Wolverine’s doomed love Mariko Yashida. All fours issues are presented here as a set: #1 is a splendid VF+, #2 & #4 both very respectable VF grades, #3 structurally sound but let down a bit by some white marks (possibly stacking ink?) at the edges of the cover, VG/FN.

American Update: Fantastic Four #16 with Ant-Man & Dr. Doom

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC14th June 2021

*Marvel: Ant-Man made his first guest appearance in FF #16, in which he aided Marvel’s First Family in their adventures in the mysterious micro-world of Doctor Doom in a classic Lee & Kirby tale. This lowish-graded pence printed copy has extra staples added, a long diagonal colour breaking cover crease, marks on the inside cover staple areas where it looks like tape may have been removed, edge wear, corner blunting and general ‘tiredness’. The feature page on Mr Fantastic is missing, although all story pages are present, so we have thus designated an ‘Apparent’ grade and priced it accordingly.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Ka-Zar & Zabu in X-Men #10

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC12th June 2021

*Marvel: Apart from a shared name and attribute of being ‘Lord of the Jungle’, there was little similarity between the Ka-Zar of Marvel’s Golden Age and the character introduced in X-Men #10. Unlike his predecessor, this Ka-Zar ruled over the Savage Land and had Zabu, a big pussycat of a sabre-tooth, as his companion. Ka-Zar has, of course, gone on to become a fixture of the Marvel Universe, with several of his own series under his belt; the long association of Marvel’s Merry Mutants with the Savage Land also started right here. This is an honest pence stamped copy, with good staples, decent pages and just average edge wear and corner blunting, nothing horrible.

American Update: Spider-Mania/Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Norman Osborn in Amazing #37

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC14th June 2021

*Marvel: I think if you’re reading this, you must know who Norman Osborn is, so we won’t dwell on that, save to say that this where he made his very first appearance (as Norman Osborn, that is). In this penultimate Ditko issue, Spidey comes up against a couple of wacky robots as only Sturdy Steve could design them. Not a great copy, pence printed, with quite a few colour-breaking creases, corner blunting, edge wear, a tiny chip out at base of spine, but reasonable pages and staples.

American Update: What’s Old: Spider-Mania: Amazing #45 with the Lizard

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC12th June 2021

*Marvel: What’s Old is our feature where we highlight stuff from our catalogue that you may have missed. A John Romita gem this update, a superior copy of Amazing Spider-Man #45, the second part of Spidey’s second clash with the Lizard. This is a bright, glossy copy with just minimal wear including a couple of small faint creases at bottom corners. A brilliant cover image which the quality of this copy brings to life.

American Update: Spider-Mania: Wondrous 150th issue of Amazing

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC14th June 2021

*Marvel: In issue #150 of Amazing Spider-Man, we find Peter racked with doubt: is he the real Peter Parker or is he a clone? Coming on the end of the clone saga, this issue appeared to put an end to this question, or so we thought as the time. Spidey comes up against several of his old foes, or does he? Archie Goodwin and Gil Kane reveal all. A lovely high grade glossy copy, with just the tiniest wear at the corners.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Debut of Time Variance Authority in Thor #372

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC14th June 2021

*Marvel: Rumour has it that the Time Variance Authority (timeline monitors) will have a major part to play in the upcoming Loki TV series. What better time then to invest in their first appearance in Thor #372, part of the acclaimed Walt Simonson run on Thor? We present a nice copy, with just a few non-colour breaking creases at the spine and right edge.

American Update: Mighty Marvel Firsts: Blade the Vampire Slayer in Tomb of Dracula #10

Posted on 12th June 2021 by 30CC12th June 2021

*Horror/Mystery 1960-1980s: By its tenth issue, Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan’s highly acclaimed run on Tomb of Dracula was in full swing, racking up plaudits from critics and fans alike, when suddenly there came a character who was to outstrip even the success of his comic book ‘parent’. Blade the Vampire Slayer debuted in issue #10, and, numerous comic-book appearances and a highly successful movie trilogy (Marvel’s first such, in fact) behind him, remains one of the more enduring breakthrough characters of the 1970s. With the Blade franchise shortly about to be ‘rebooted’, in the media’s voracious frenzy for new properties, Blade’s early appearances are once more spiralling upward, and the prices on this debut issue has risen substantially over the last year. This is a pence printed copy, in lovely glossy condition, tight and flat with great staples and white to off-white pages. Wear is restricted to tiny stress marks at the staples and a tiny nick towards the top right edge of the cover. There is a soft crease diagonal for about 9 cm from the centre of the right cover edge, but this only just breaks colour and is barely noticeable. Without it, this copy would grade better than VF and be comfortably in four figures, more than twice as expensive. High resolution images are available on request.
